The Best We Could Do
Thi Bui

Longform Says

Thi Bui has written and drawn one of the most striking and memorable personal narratives we’ve read in years. Her debut graphic novel, The Best We Can Do, tells the story of her family’s immigration to the U.S. during the Vietnam War, and is a perfect example of how powerful the form can be. Viet Thanh Nguyen called it “a book to break your heart and heal it,” and we couldn’t agree more. An erstwhile public high school teacher, Thi is currently on the faculty of the California College of the Arts’ comics MFA program.
